Green Captains

Date:Jan 17, 2013

Our popular Green Captain program seeks to find a BGA liaison at each and every Broadway, Off-Broadway and touring show or venue. We reached 100% participation on Broadway for the first time in 2011/12. Many Green Captains are chosen by their peers at the first rehearsal or soon afterwards. These liaisons – it can be a star of the show or a dresser or crew member — are then sent a welcome kit with information on how to help their production get greener.

The kit lists ways to help green the production backstage, lists items the BGA collects (from corks to textiles to printer cartridges), allows Green Captains to find out details about the recycling programs at their theatres, and helps them swap ideas and get helpful hints from those serving on other productions. Some Green Captains have been our liaisons on more than one show and several have served as Green Captains for years.

We hold quarterly meetings, often with guest speakers, to bring all of our Green Captains together to share ideas and concerns and to learn how to be effective environmental advocates.

If you’re interested in becoming a Green Captain for your show (on or off-Broadway, or on tour), email us at green@broadway.org.

We have also launched a College Green Captain program, and theatre departments across the nation are creating more sustainable theatre.
