Join Circular Services, Waterfront Alliance, and the NYC Department of City Planning for a tour of a Materials Recovery Facility!
The facility tour will begin with introductions to our facility, operations, recycling in NYC, and recycling in general. We will then walk through the Recycling Education Center where visitors get a hands-on look at how recycling works and how we process 1,000 tons of materials each day. Lastly, we will view the “Tip Floor” where recyclables are received and the system that sorts them, the largest facility of its kind in North America. Along the way, staff from the Waterfront Alliance will detail how the site earned WEDG® (Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines) Verification, the gold standard for waterfront design. Learn how the site successfully incorporated WEDG principles of resilience, ecology, and engaging public access, all within an industrial/maritime use. Attendees will also view sustainability features including retention ponds, habitats, and New York City’s first and only commercial scale wind turbine. Questions are welcome throughout the tour.
Note: The facility is located at the end of the 29th Street Pier. Visitors should continue down 29th Street towards the water and use the pedestrian walkway to reach the front entrance of the facility.
