Throughout the course of this project, Blackwell also secured funding to install LED house lights in the mainstage theater and wrote a grant proposal to the university’s Green Fee Committee to try and obtain four iPads and a stage management app to be used by the school’s stage management team. This latter initiative has greatly reduced paper usage.

Through his Paperless Stage Management Project, Blackwell has been able to make great strides in sustainability in the Department of Theater and Dance at the University of Memphis.

University of Memphis student, Travis Blackwell won the BGA’s first ever College Green Captain Award due to his dedication to sustainability in theater through the Paperless Stage Management Project.

This project is a student and faculty initiative to eliminate the use of paper in writing and running theater performances. Blackwell included “Green Facts” in all paperwork and emails sent to the cast and production team. These facts included topics like recycling and tips on which lightbulbs to purchase.
