A Green Captain is a green theatre advocate on Broadway, in their college theatre department, on tour, at their local venue, or anywhere else that theatre exists. Anyone from any department can be a Green Captain - the includes crew, performers, ushers, stage managers, designers, arts administrators, and more. Each Green Captain has the power to implement and encourage a wide range of environmentally friendlier practices. With the support of and resources from the Broadway Green Alliance community, you will help redefine the industry’s practices to be more sustainable.

Broadway Green Captains
As a Broadway Green Captain, you’ll be part of a community working together to reduce its collective environmental impact. By championing sustainable initiatives within your company, you can help spark a ripple effect—one that extends across Broadway and out into the wider theatre community. Every production plays a role, and your leadership will help move the entire industry forward. Whether you’re looking for strategies, inspiration, or one-on-one guidance, we’re here to support you.
Touring & Venue Green Captains
As part of a touring production, you’re in an exciting position to influence sustainable practices across the country. Touring Green Captains help lead these efforts from within their companies, finding creative ways to reduce impact on the road, while Venue Green Captains bring sustainability to life in their own spaces—implementing greener practices year-round and collaborating with incoming tours to keep the momentum going. You can help build a culture of sustainability that reaches audiences, inspires other productions, and strengthens the industry across the country.
Regional Green Captains
Theatre is happening everywhere—and so is the theatre climate movement. As a Regional Green Captain, you can help bring greener practices to life. Whether you’re part of a LORT company, a small professional theatre, or a volunteer-run organization, your work matters. Through the BGA, you can connect with your local community and the resources around you—including any nearby Regional Green Alliance chapters—to share ideas, build momentum, and deepen your impact.
Off-Broadway Green Captains
Off-Broadway has always been a space for innovation—and that includes sustainability. Since launching the Off-Broadway Green Committee in 2013 with the Off-Broadway League, we've welcomed Green Captains from Off-Broadway, Off-Off-Broadway, and independent theatres into a growing community of environmental leaders. The Broadway Green Alliance is here to support you with resources, guidance, and a network of theatre-makers like you who are committed to making sustainable choices part of their every day.
Union, Event, & Organization Green Captains
Whether you're advocating within a union, planning a one-night event, or working year-round in an arts organization, your efforts can create meaningful change. The Broadway Green Alliance is here to support you with tools, guidance, and a network of theatre-makers who are working towards building a more sustainable theatre industry.
College Green Captains
Are you a student or faculty member driving the theatre climate movement forward at your school? Join our national network of college theatre-makers and help bring sustainable practices to life in your theatre department. This program can be shaped to fit your school’s unique needs and goals—whether that’s greening productions, improving shop practices, or sparking conversation in the classroom.
Students in the program are also eligible to apply for the annual BGA College Green Captain Award, which recognizes and celebrates outstanding leadership in sustainable theatre.

A Green Captain is a green theatre advocate that has the opportunity to implement a wide range of environmentally friendlier practices and help redefine our industry’s practices to create a healthier and safer world.
With the support from the Broadway Green Alliance, each Green Captain can decide what they wish to implement - there is no set requirement for type or amount of activity. Initiatives can range from organizing clothing swaps and textile pickups to recycling instrument strings to collecting signatures for a clean energy bill.

Whatever you make of it. We know that you are busy - we’re all working theatre professionals ourselves - and the program is designed to adapt to your capacity and ebb and flow as needed. Think of it as a “choose your own adventure” commitment, but with lots of support and fellow theatre-activists alongside you.

Anyone! We encourage more than one Green Captain within any show/venue/organization and recommend that volunteers join from a variety of departments. There is no limit to the number of Green Captains for each theatre company and show.

Once you sign up you become connected with Green Captains and passionate advocates across the country and gain immediate access to a robust library of resources. These include the Production and Design Toolkit, as well as specialized toolkits for each type of Green Captain and invitations to volunteer events. You also receive bespoke support from BGA staff who are available for one-on-one coaching, conversations, and group presentations.

We know that hope can be hard to come by right now. It is overwhelming watching hard-won environmental progress unravel. The climate crisis is inextricably linked to all of the other injustices surrounding us, and that is why we focus on a holistic approach to sustainability and utilizing the special skills that theatre-makers can bring to this fight, including storytelling, collaboration, and creative-problem solving. From action comes hope, and we hope you will join the sustainable theatre movement as a Green Captain.
