By championing sustainable initiatives within your company, you can help spark a ripple effect—one that extends across Broadway and out into the wider theatre community. Every production plays a role, and your leadership will help move the entire industry forward. Whether you’re looking for strategies, inspiration, or one-on-one guidance, we’re here to support you.

Touring & Venue Green Captains

As part of a touring production, you’re in an exciting position to influence sustainable practices across the country. Touring Green Captains help lead these efforts from within their companies, finding creative ways to reduce impact on the road, while Venue Green Captains bring sustainability to life in their own spaces—implementing greener practices year-round and collaborating with incoming tours to keep the momentum going. You can help build a culture of sustainability that reaches audiences, inspires other productions, and strengthens the industry across the country.

Initiatives can range from organizing clothing swaps and textile pickups to recycling instrument strings to collecting signatures for a clean energy bill.

  • Whatever you make of it. We know that you are busy - we’re all working theatre professionals ourselves - and the program is designed to adapt to your capacity and ebb and flow as needed. Think of it as a “choose your own adventure” commitment, but with lots of support and fellow theatre-activists alongside you.

  • Anyone! We encourage more than one Green Captain within any show/venue/organization and recommend that volunteers join from a variety of departments. There is no limit to the number of Green Captains for each theatre company and show.

  • Once you sign up you become connected with Green Captains and passionate advocates across the country and gain immediate access to a robust library of resources. These include the Production and Design Toolkit, as well as specialized toolkits for each type of Green Captain and invitations to volunteer events. • We know that hope can be hard to come by right now. It is overwhelming watching hard-won environmental progress unravel. The climate crisis is inextricably linked to all of the other injustices surrounding us, and that is why we focus on a holistic approach to sustainability and utilizing the special skills that theatre-makers can bring to this fight, including storytelling, collaboration, and creative-problem solving. From action comes hope, and we hope you will join the sustainable theatre movement as a Green Captain.
