Green captains

Our popular Green Captain program seeks to find a BGA liaison at each and every Broadway, Off-Broadway, and touring show or venue. You can find more information about all of these initiatives below. If you would like more information about our College Green Captain program, please visit our College Green Captains page.

Broadway Green Captains

We reached 100% participation on Broadway for the first time in 2011/12. Many Broadway Green Captains are chosen by their peers at the first rehearsal or soon afterwards. These liaisons – it can be a star of the show or a dresser or crew member – are then sent a welcome kit with information on how to help their production get greener.

The kit lists ways to help green the production backstage, highlights items the BGA collects, allows Green Captains to find out details about the recycling programs at their theatres, and helps them swap ideas and get helpful hints from those serving on other productions. Some Green Captains have been our liaisons on more than one show and several have served as Green Captains for years.

OFF-BROADWAY GREEN CAPTAINS

In 2013 the BGA began working with the Off-Broadway League to set up an Off-Broadway Green Committee to explore greening in their community. The Off-Broadway Green Committee now includes Off-Off-Broadway and Independent Theatres as well.

The committee’s first initiative was the launch of an Off-Broadway Green Captain program. This ongoing activity quickly included more than 45 Off-Broadway Green Captains using our newly-revised Off-Broadway Green Captain Kit. The kit combines elements from our successful Broadway Green Captain Kit and additional resources for smaller theatres, with a dual focus on both venue greening and theatre company greening, including green hints for offices.

Touring Green Captains

In May 2018, the BGA brought the successful Green Captain program to the road, tailoring it to the unique needs of the touring community. Currently, many theatres around the country have extensive environmental programs. Similarly, many touring shows employ greener practices. The Touring Green Captain program is designed to bring these together to produce better results.

Each participating venue and production will assign a Green Captain who is knowledgeable about their respective greening practices and goals. Prior to a show’s arrival at a venue, the Venue Green Captain and the Production Green Captain will connect and share practices, resources, and needs in order to make their time together more environmentally friendly. For more information, check out the program's information sheet here
