Anonymous Ensemble: Body of Land
Anonymous Ensemble was selected as a recipient for our 2023 NYC Theatre Greening Grant. This opportunity helped them rethink their creative process by integrating solar energy into the development of Body of Land at Westbrook Memorial Garden. With creativity and adaptability, they successfully powered rehearsals and recording sessions using solar energy, even incorporating solar-powered speakers to enhance their setup. We invited Anonymous Ensemble to share deeper insights into the impact of their work.

Our Body of Land: Westbrook Memorial Garden project went really well! We were able to power most of our rehearsals, including our recording sessions with the generator, and could have almost powered our performances—if we could have reliably had the generator battery fully charged by sundown each day. We also bought some solar-powered speakers which helped to lessen the draw load on the generator.

Our biggest challenge was working out in the elements with no electricity or water, and so the solar generator we bought proved to be absolutely essential to our process. It was an interesting challenge to set for ourselves and we learned a lot about equipment power draw and pitfalls of a cloudy day.

We presented a workshop performance of the project in August and a premiere in October, all free of charge. We were going to present two performances of Body of Land in October but one of them got rained out. We also worked with the Westbrook Memorial Garden community throughout the process of creating the performance. Below is a short video of some of our community collaborators in their plant personas.
